A Brief History of Community Partners

In the spring of 1999, a public meeting was held to explore ways to save a historic home in the village of Greenville. The group that formed raised over $30,000 from area residents to purchase the homestead known as the Sherill House. Unfortunately, the home could not be saved, but those involved in the effort decided to commit Community Partners to the protection, preservation and development of natural and historical resources in Greenville as the "doing business as" name of the Greenville Citizen's Park Committee.  The Greenville Citizen's Park Committee, formed in 1992, was instrumental in the original acquisition and development of Vanderbilt Park, the town's recreational centerpiece. The Committee was formed to buy the park lands from Catherine Vanderbilt Davidson for $240,000, which was raised through grants, fundraisers and money that had been sitting in a park fund that was created by a tax levied on land developers to provide recreation space. Subsequently, the GCPC worked with the town to write a grant for $86,000 (in-kind matching grant) that created the ballfields, entrance road, tot playground, nature trail and parking lot. In the early 2000's Community Partners used the 501.c.3 corporation to raise $3,000 to help finish the basketball court and create rules and procedures for using the park.
